The beginning of the electricity generation endeavor from Upper Tamakoshi results in a daily income loss of 4 crore.
There are plans to generate energy from Upper Tamakoshi, the 456 megawatt hydroelectric project that is the largest currently in operation, as soon as possible. Large amounts of rain on Friday and Saturday triggered a landslide that severely damaged the upper Tamakoshi hydroelectric power station's headwalks, which are located in Bigu Rural Municipality-1 Lamabagar, Dolakha.
The subterranean canal (culvert) that transfers water from the dam to the desander, the control room structure, and the sand thickening pool (desander) are situated somewhat beneath the dam site and have sustained significant damage. The building housing the control room and its equipment suffered total destruction. Big stones are stacked in the two ponds in Disander, Ledo, Gegran. Each of the two ponds has an estimated accumulation of 75–75 thousand cubic meters of mud, stones, etc.
The avalanche that fell from above severely damaged the control room building, desander, and culvert. Two firm employees who worked in control and two soldiers who were assigned to security were among the four people who died. Both falling stones and water from above continue to flow into the Khare River.
The Tamakoshi River's water flow was excessive due to the continuous rain, therefore power production was halted on Friday at 7 p.m. Because all of the dam's gates were open, any potential harm to the project's structure was avoided. It is yet unknown how much damage the culvert between the dam and the desander has sustained. The Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Station's promoter firm is losing Rs 40 million a day in revenue as a result of the energy generation stoppage.
On Tuesday, a group of experts, including State Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Poorna Bahadur Tamang, Secretary Suresh Acharya, and Executive Director of the Nepal
Electricity Authority Kulman Ghising, visited the project site and collected data regarding the landslide's damage. The team talked about many choices for running the power plant after maintaining the structures with the expert group and the management of the organization. The team also included surveyors from the National Insurance Institute, who provided insurance for the hydro power station's assets.
According to State Minister Tamang, the country has suffered a great loss as a result of the shutdown of Upper Tamakoshi, and every effort should be made to resume electricity generation as soon as feasible. State Minister Tamang stated that the Ministry is prepared to offer the assistance and support required for this.
Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Ltd. is the project's promoter. The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Executive Director Ghisingh, stated that the control room, desander, culvert, and other structures suffered significant damage from the landslide. Ghising stated that since the area is still dangerous, they would conduct a comprehensive geological research using a lidar survey to detect the risk. They brought up the fact that the Khare River is still rising and that large stones can be observed above the location of the aforementioned structures.
It is observed that the damage to the structure can be detected only after removing the stones, ledo, etc. heaped up in the desander, so we are going to remove the stones, ledo, etc. first, he stated. The biggest power plant in operation is closed, which has already created an internal electricity supply issue. As a result, the export of electricity during the rainy season is negatively impacted. We have done this by taking every action that is feasible.
The company's CEO, Mohan Prasad Gautam, stated that the expert group had made a number of recommendations regarding how to run the power house. Maintenance steps had already been performed, and the action plan's implementation had begun.
"The process of repairing and commissioning the 11 KV power line taken from Gongar to operate the gate in the dam and cleaning the descender and connecting the power transformer and cable authority has already started," stated CEO Gautam. He claimed that the road near Kavre Bhir, which runs beneath the access road from Gongar, the location of the power plant, to the dam site was uncomfortable for around 100 meters.
