The Finance Committee passed a punishment bill and a report on banking offenses.

The House of Representatives' Finance Committee has approved the report on the 2080 Banking Offenses and Punishment (Second Amendment) Bill. The bill in question was approved with modifications during the Monday committee meeting at Singh Darbar.

The draft of the Bill, 2080 to alter the Banking Offenses and Punishment Act, 2064 was approved by the Cabinet on July 23, 2080. On October 16, 2080, Finance Minister Dr. Prakasharan Mahat filed the bill in the House.

The government has submitted a measure to standardize the various legal remedies available in cases of check dishonor. Following its passage, the measure will be sent to Speaker Devraj Ghimire, who will ask that it be brought before the House as soon as feasible, according to Committee Chairman Santosh Chalise. He disclosed that the draft now includes a clause that raises the penalty for dishonoring cheques for more than 10 crores from two to four years.

The Banking Offenses and Punishment Act, 2064 has been modified by the government to include check dishonor, often known as bounce, as a banking offense. According to the Bill, refusing to pay a cheque that is not honored is a banking offense that carries a punishment of five percent for up to four years. The maximum penalty is one month. The terms "bank," "financial institution," or "cooperative bank" have taken the place of the words "bank" or "financial institution" in the original act.
